Last night’s game may have summed up the season for the Boston Red Sox. Down 6-0 to the Twins at home, Boston (74-64) battled back to within a run, but couldn’t get over the hump in what turned out to be a 6-5 loss. The defeat was another setback in the playoff hopes for the defending champs as they now sit 5 1/2 games behind Cleveland and Oakland for the final AL wild card spot. It’s just the opposite for the Twins (86-52), who continue to cruise along with nine wins in their last 10 games, including a 7-1 record on their current 10-games road trip. These two teams will take the field again tonight at Fenway with the Twins sending Jose Berrios (11-7, 3.57) to the mound against the Bosox’ Eduardo Rodriguez (16-5, 3.97). In the WNBA, the Connecticut Sun (22-9) are trying to keep pace with the Washington Mystics for the top spot in the playoff seedings and come into tonight’s contest against the Dallas Wings (10-21) looking to extend their home winning streak to nine straight. And we’re just one day away from kickoff as the NFL celebrates its 100th season with a matchup of two original franchises as the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears meet for the 199th time on Thursday night at Soldier Field. Green Bay holds a slight edge in the series with 97 wins to Chicago’s 95 and six ties, and the outlook for the opener looks to be as tight as the series.
