The granddaddy of all NFL matchups takes center stage tonight as the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears kick off the league’s 100th season at Soldier Field. This series dates back to the days of George Halas and Curly Lambeau with the Packers holding a slight 97-95 edge with six ties. Last year, the teams split the two games with each winning on their home field. Overall, the Bears are coming off a 12-4 season that saw them come within a missed FG of advancing to the second round of the playoffs. For Green Bay, 2018 was a year to forget as the Pack dropped to 6-9-1, which led to the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy. Into his shoes steps offensive guru Matt LaFleur and the hope in Green Bay is that he can get more out of QB Aaron Rodgers and the Packers this year. On the diamond, the Washington Nationals (78-60) are in the driver’s seat for getting one of the two NL wild-card spots. But if the Nats still have any chance of catching the NL East-leading Braves (86-54), they’ll have to take advantage of seven head-to-head contests with Atlanta over the next 10 days. The first comes tonight at SunTrust Park with Stephen Strasburg (16-5, 3.47) taking the mound for Washington against Atlanta’s Max Fried (15-4, 4.05). Both teams come in hot with the Nats have won 17 of their last 22, while the Braves have been even better with a 17-4 mark over the same span.
