Final 2009-10: Kane Able To Deliver For Chicago

Patrick Kane scored the series-clincher in OT of Game 6 to hand Chicago its first Stanley Cup championship since 1961 as the Blackhawks defeated the Flyers (4-3).  The victory capped a run that saw Chicago knock off Nashville, Vancouver and San Jose before beating Philly in the Finals.  While the Flyers suffered their 6th straight Stanley Cup loss since winning it last in 1975, they were a surprise to get there as a No. 7 seed after beating New Jersey, Boston and Montreal.   Here are the final Dunkel Index NHL rankings for the 2009-10 season.

Final 2008-09: Penguins Clip Wings

In a final that seemed destined to play out the same as last season, Pittsburgh stunned Detroit by coming back from a 3-2 series deficit to capture its third championship in franchise history.  The Penguins capped the comeback with a 2-1 win on Detroit’s ice in Game Seven behind Max Talbot’s two goals and spectacular goaltending from Marc-Andre Fleury   Here are the Dunkel Index NHL rankings for the 2008-09 season.

Final 2007-08: Detroit Takes Cup Again

The Red Wings became the first team since 2002 (when Detroit also did it) to win the President’s Cup and Stanley Cup in the same season as the Red Wings dispatched Pittsburgh in six games to claim their fourth Cup since 1997.  Henrik Zetterberg scored what proved to be the game-winner and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.  The Penguins had a great run to get to the Finals, but couldn’t avoid their first loss there after winning in 1991 and ’92.  Here are the complete Dunkel Index NHL rankings for the 2007-08 season.

Final 2006-07: Ducks Power Past Senators

Anaheim came into the Stanley Cup with a reputation as being a physical team.  The Ducks lived up to that reputation, even earning a one-game suspension for defenseman Chris Pronger for a blow to the head in Game Three.  But Anaheim’s physical play eventually overwhelmed Ottawa as the Ducks hammered the Senators in Game Five (6-2) to claim its first championship and the first Stanley Cup ever in California.  Scott Niedermayer claimed the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP, but goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere (13-4 record; 1.97 GAA) and Ryan Getzlaf (team-leading 17 points) were just as instrumental in the team’s run.  Here are the complete Dunkel Index NHL rankings for the 2006-07 season.
